Literacy

Our new Unit of Study focuses exploration of characters to help us understand the stories we read. The students will describe how the characters act, feel and talk. We will be revisiting fairy and folk tales that we read earlier in the year.

In phonics, we are continuing to work with short vowel sounds. This week our focus is on short Ee.

The animal character that accompanies this sound is Edna Elephant. Some of the word families we are working with are; et, eck, ed, en.

Please continue to help your child learn the twenty-five sight words. I am also adding some extra words each week.

The children are writing stories about personal experiences. Many of their stories are about trips, families, pets and friends. When your children write at home, encourage them to sound out the words using one finger for each sound. It is much more powerful for the children to sound out the words themselves. Please try not to make the sounds for your children.

Please let me know if you would like some pointers on reading and writing with your children.
